    I Am a Killer

My Take: Prisoners recount the events that lead to their murderous crimes. Ok, so I am usually not one to have much sympathy for murderers, but give this one a shot. This isn't just a story about serial killers or anything like that. Even I have gotten tired of serial killer documentaries. And this isn't your typical prison documentary either, even though I love a good prison documentary. This series is undeniably more and more interesting the deeper and deeper you go. If you’ve already made up your mind about death row inmates, I have a feeling that you might develop a least a little bit of empathy towards them after you hear about some of their experiences growing up. Some of the best prison movies are based on real events and this stuff is as real as it gets. With that being said, another interesting aspect of the series is deciphering the men who know they clearly made the biggest mistakes of their lives, and are able to reflect on it as adults, from the men that seem to still just be, for lack of a better word, evil to the core. If you're a fan of prison movies and want to get a glimpse of the real thing, this is a great pick tonight.

    Win It All

My Take: Down on his luck, a small time gambler agrees to hold a bag for a friend while he does a stint in jail. All he has to do is keep his head down, go to his gamblers anonymous meetings and not open the bag. Gambling movies on Netflix are kind of hard to come by. There are a lot of funny characters and the main actor always seems to keep things interesting. A great supporting cast, especially the brother. I’ve always been fascinated by the destructive nature of people with addictions and Jake Johnson really gets into this role. Plus, Netflix best bets are hard to come by. Get it? Ok ok, enough already.

    Kill the Messenger

My Take: Journalist Gary Webb unravels the true story of the crack epidemic in America and how the government not only knew about it, they perpetuated it. I actually wasn't a huge fan of Jeremy Renner until I saw Kill the Messenger. You will feel the moral outrage of this movie. It's so horrible that so many things like this can get swept under the rug and no one is held accountable for it. As far as true crime movies on Netflix go, this should be near the top of the list. Imagine how many lives have been ruined.

    Evil Genius

My Take: A robbery gone wrong in Erie, Pennsylvania brings to light a diabolical plan that leads the FBI on a cat and mouse chase. It's hard to come up with an Evil Genius review that actually makes sense. I came cross Evil Genius by searching for "evil genius Netflix" when I thought I was looking for a kids movie for my niece. Man, talk about a too weird to be true documentary. It seems like each Evil Genius episode gets weirder and weirder. Evil Genius will have you scratching your head in disbelief that something like this actually happened. It just seems so weird and ridiculous. I struggled to understand why in the world someone would want to put in so much effort for such a strange and twisted plan. I mean it's a fascinating story even if you can't quite put your finger on the reason why. It's a bizarre mix of hoarders, true crime, and social outcasts. Each character brings their own level of strangeness and you can't really figure out what's going on in any of their heads. I know I sound like a broken record but I just can't come up with any answers in this one. Evil Genius will hook you though. I couldn't stop watching from the first episode on and this Evil Genius documentary isn't something you're likely to forget anytime soon. If I were you, I'd start with the Evil Genius trailer just to get an idea of what you're getting yourself into.

    What Happened to Monday

My Take: In a world where siblings are not allowed to live due to over population, a man raises 7 identical twins and devises a plan to keep their existence a secret. The first thing I thought of when watching this movie was, wow, that was a lot of acting for one person! Makes you wonder how long it took to actually get this movie finished.  The next thing I noticed was that this movie was a lot more violent than I thought it was going to be. It's definitely one of the better Netflix action movies right now.  Also, I’m glad to see there’s some creativity left at Netflix.  It’s fun to watch this fast paced thriller no matter what mood you're in. I'm always happy to add Noomi Rapace movies to my Netflix movies list. She is a great actor and I've loved watching her since The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Maybe the best Netflix original I've seen this month.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore

My Take: A woman fed up with life and the people around her enlists the help of a neighbor to track down the thieves who burglarized her house. This Netflix Original movie that was surprisingly entertaining. The random characters in this one are all original and really good at the roles they play, especially the gritty ones. Add this to your list of good thrillers on Netflix. Good acting throughout and it's surprisingly dark!

    The Staircase

My Take: The high-profile case of Michael Peterson on trial for the murder of his wife. The Staircase is the next logical step after Making a Murderer. I know there are a lot of people out there that love true crime and as far as Netflix true crime goes, this is one of the best true crime series they got. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat and ultimately you'll either lean towards one side or the other. Also, I'm always surprised at the amount of footage people collect during trials that they don't necessarily know are going to be so sensational at the time. The Staircase truly is a puzzle of a story and it's hard to talk about it without giving anything away. Regardless of your ultimate opinion on what really happened, I'm sure you will agree that this is a must-watch documentary for anyone who enjoys true crime and it's a powerful representation of what the justice system is capable of. This is definitely one of the strangest true crime stories I've seen in a long time.

    Silent Hill

My Take: A mother finds herself stuck in an eerie ghost town searching for her missing daughter. I grew up playing the video game Silent Hill and I was excited that they decided to make it into a movie because the video game was creepy as hell. I didn't think they would manage to pull it off though! Silent Hill is one of the most surprisingly disturbing and bloody Netflix movies I've seen in a long time. I can't say I really have any movies like this on my Netflix movies list but I hope I find some more soon. The story can be a little confusing, but I really doubt you will care once you see all the gruesome scenes that await. If you're looking for a very dark Netflix thriller (or Netflix horror movie) Silent Hill is a great choice.

    1922

My Take: 1922 is the story of a simple farmer doing whatever he can to keep his land and live out his days on the farm. Actually, it’s funny, I started 1922 and about 5 minutes in I switch it off and went to bed. I thought it was just gonna be another cheesy movie. For some reason, I decided to give it another shot and it actually turned out to be one of the best Netflix movies I've seen in awhile! Stephen King has his creepy stamp all over it and Thomas Jane did a great job. There are some pretty haunting scenes and lots of bloody action. I will continue to add all these Stephen King gems to my Netflix movie list, so I hope you're a fan!

    Cloud Atlas

My Take: Cloud Atlas explores the impacts and actions of lives throughout the past, present, and future. I thought this was one of the top sci fi movies of 2012 and one of the best science fiction movies I've seen lately. So Cloud Atlas is a much bigger movie than I would usually promote, but I'm doing so because it got such bad reviews. I wish I could say it wasn't a common thing, but the more I read peoples reviews, the more I realize that the world is just filled with people that either don't know what a good movie is, or they want to pretend like they are the best critics in the world. I myself don't pretend to be the best critic, but I know a good movie when I see one. Time and time again I have promoted movies that I claim to be in a range of 7 to 10 and, at the very least, aren't a waste of your time. Cloud Atlas isn't a story to be taken literally or to imagine a future that actually consists of the story, as some crazy people have mentioned. It's a movie that is very well thought out and only follows the confines of a story that was completely made up, yet is highly entertaining. It's extremely original and that alone is something that nearly every movie lacks. Even most science fiction movies aren't original these days. In fact, the latest sci fi movies on Netflix are pretty horrible. I personally thought Cloud Atlas was a great movie, but even if you somehow don't, I bet you will admit that the entertainment factor is at the very least, worth a 7 rating. Also, I'm never a fan of promoting big name actors on my Netflix movies list, but I wanted to make an exception here because it's worth it. I haven't read the Cloud Atlas book though, so I can't say how close it was to the movie, but the Cloud Atlas movie is worth your time. Great sci fi movies don't have to be plausible, they just have to be entertaining.

    30 Days of Night

My Take: In the small town of Barrow, Alaska there is a full month of complete darkness for twenty-four hours a day. The people who remain in town are stalked by an unseen, bloodthirsty evil. 30 Days of Night is a great choice for anyone who likes vampire movies on Netflix. In a genre plagued by unoriginality, 30 Days of Night brings a slight twist to the normally overdone category. It's dark (no pun intended), gruesome, and bloody just like some of the best horror movies on Netflix. There's a lot of chills (no pun intended) and thrills to keep the horror fans happy and Josh Hartnett puts together an entertaining performance. It's almost a type of monster movie with the evil lurking in the darkness. I'm always looking for some gory fun and this is a perfect vampire flick addition to my Netflix movie list.

    The Ritual

My Take: The Ritual is the story of four friends going on a hike through the Scandinavian wilderness to celebrate the life of a friend they lost. I suppose The Ritual movie is a ritual movie but that doesn't really sum up the whole movie. Although I do hesitate to call it a scary movie, I personally thought The Ritual managed to get pretty terrifying to start. As the story goes on, things just get very weird. But above all, it’s an original story with some interesting cinematography. Just make sure that you Google The Ritual 2017 and not other versions. It reminded me of a mix of The Blair Witch Project and The Hallow. Creepy, and very weird.

    Gerald's Game

My Take: A sex game gone wrong forces visions and secrets to surface for a woman trapped in handcuffs. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You don’t have much chance going up against Stephen King in the horror genre. He always has to take things a step further and gently eases you out of your comfort zone and slowly into the depths of his twisted mind. Gerald’s game is very well acted and is one of the best thrillers on Netflix right now. I'd say this is the best Stephen King movie out this year. Be warned, like any good Stephen King movie, gruesome scenes await. Gerald's Game is also one of the best new Netflix movies by Netflix Originals. Good new movies on Netflix are hard to find so take advantage of Gerald's Game while you can.

    Wind River

My Take: A mysterious murder plagues a small Wyoming Indian Reservation with a bad reputation. When I originally saw the Wind River trailer I didn't think much of it. When I watched it, the first thing I thought about was, “Wow, Wind River Wyoming looks cold!” I’m not a big fan of living in the snow, never mind dealing with a damn blizzard. The Wind River cast is strong and Jeremy Renner puts on a good performance as a man willing to help his townsfolk find a killer and deal with tragedy he knows all too well. After watching the movie, I looked up the Wind River true story and it was pretty depressing. As if Native Americans didn’t have it bad enough throughout the history of America. It’s sad to read about the crime and poverty-stricken Indian Reservations in the U.S.

    The Keepers

My Take: The story of the unsolved murder and the mysteries that surround the death of a nun decades ago. The first thing that I will say is that it's a downright shame that a lot of people have not heard about The Keepers. This isn't your typical church documentary or one of those cheesy church movies. It's so hard to see another horrible catholic church scandal and this may be one of the first ones that to actually be documented. This documentary is a heart-wrenching tale with some of the vilest human beings I've ever witnessed or heard of. With all the recent exposures of the church being involved in sexual misconduct, The Keepers seems all too real and heartbreaking knowing so many young women's lives were irrevocably damaged at the hands of the people they trusted the most. Once you really dig into the story I have a feeling you will feel the exact same way I did. You wish you could go back in time and find these men and put a stop to all the horrible abuse once and for all. It seems like we're hearing about a new church scandal every day. The Keepers is one of the oldest examples I've seen of how horrible church scandals can be. Skip the nun movie about the horror story, this is true life horror. I admire the main characters of the documentary who stayed steadfast for decades in search of sister Kathy's murderer.

    Horns

My Take: Blamed for the murder of his girlfriend, a man awakens to find he is growing horns. I have no idea why Horns has negative reviews. Maybe it's just me, but I love dark comedies and thought Daniel Radcliffe did a great job. If you're looking for one of the best dark comedies on Netflix, I think you might have found one. I mean common, we have to let him get away from Harry Potter right? Give Horns a shot, you won't be disappointed.

    Virunga

My Take: Brave men risk their lives protecting the last mountain gorillas on the planet. Man, good war movies on Netflix are hard to find and I'm so glad I finally got one! This is a heartfelt story of the effects of war and corruption on the beautiful and bio-diverse Virunga National Park. Forget the theatrics of war movies, this is raw and real. One of the best Netflix war movies and best Netflix original.

    Manson Family Vacation

My Take: Two brothers go on a tour of the sites of the Manson murders. One is a successful family man, the other lives his life through nothing but a backpack. This trip will change their relationship forever. I genuinely liked this one. Very good acting and an interesting look into the emotional issues between two brothers. A bizarre story that builds up more tension on the screen than I've seen in a long time. Well worth the watch. I'm excited to see Netflix brought this back to streaming movies. It keeps bouncing on and off my list of movies on Netflix.

    Divines

My Take: Living in the slums on the outskirts of Paris, a teenager hungry for money and power quickly slips into a life of crime. An interesting story about how poverty can light a fire under you and cause your drive and ambition to lead you down certain paths in life. The main character didn't mind that her direction led her to live life as a criminal. This one actually turned out to have great acting. A top vote for French movies on my Netflix movies list.

    Hold the Dark

My Take: Hold the Dark. Welcome to wolf town! A wolf expert is asked to search for wolves that have been killing children in a remote Alaskan village. That sounds like a pretty cheery movie already huh? So this movie was directed by a man named Jeremy Saulnier. If you haven’t heard of him already, he’s one of the men responsible for Blue Ruin and Green Room (along with Macon Blair), which are two brutally violent movies. Hold the Dark is a very strange, albeit confusing, movie filled with a heavy dose of violence. I’ve always been a fan of scenes with realistic, bloody, carnage and even when the story goes off the rails a little bit, I still feel like the pure entertainment of violence makes up for it in the long run. This is actually the first wolves movie to grace my list. This isn't one of those wolf horror movies but it may make you flinch at a scene or two. And this isn't one of those werewolf movies either. One of my favorite parts of Hold the Dark is the wild wolves used throughout the movie. I haven't seen such cool looking dogs since Dances with Wolves. So I don’t really know if you will find the answers to your questions by the end of Hold the Dark but you will find blood and lots of it.

    Trailer Park Boys: The Movie

My Take: Fresh outta jail, they gotta figure out a plan to go straight while living in the trailer park. A comedy about the life of the trailer park. It’s the trailer park that made them who they are. No list of movies on Netflix is complete without Trailer Park Boys. Even though I've heard people complain about it, I still consider it one of the best movies to watch on Netflix. It's a cult classic. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at such a vicious alcoholic before. It's one of the movies at the top of my list of Netflix comedy films.

    Stereo

My Take: A man running a motorcycle workshop has his life turned upside by the presence of an unknown stranger. I thought Stereo was well worth your time. It had a nice psychological edge to it and it was fairly original. I don't really understand why it has such negative reviews on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes, but that just goes to show that you can't trust anyone outside of JamilsList! It also claims to be a slow burning thriller on Netflix, but I personally hate anything to do with "slow burner" movies. In my experience that just equates to "boring movies" for the majority of them. So check out Stereo tonight. It's a dark movie with enough violence to keep you entertained.

    Calibre

My Take: Two lifelong friends head out into the Highlands of Scotland for a weekend hunting trip. There's a lot of things that come to mind when you think of what could go wrong in a hunting movie. My guess is that you won't see what's coming in Calibre. This movie is definitely true to its craft from the authentic Scottish pubs to the dreary Scottish weather. I haven't really seen many good Netflix suspense movies lately, but Calibre managed to finally fit the bill. It's the type of Netflix thriller that really puts you in the unfortunate position the characters find themselves in. I saw some movie reviews about it fits into the category of the best psychological thrillers on Netflix right now. I don't know if I would say all that, but it's probably the most original thriller on Netflix I've seen in a while. Netflix is seriously hurting for new movies lately, so take advantage of Calibre while you can.

    Burning Sands

My Take: A student at Frederick Douglass University proudly pledges to a famous African-American fraternity and slowly questions his decisions after increasingly violent hazings. I thought it was interesting watching Burning Sands and getting a glimpse of the mind of college kids pledging to a fraternity. It's crazy what kids will put themselves through just to be a part of a certain group. You can always predict things going badly with fraternity hazing but you still come away with a powerful view of a coming of age story. The acting was great with all characters and there's plenty of violent and ridiculous fraternity antics to keep you entertained. I'm pretty sure it's the first good Netflix movie about fraternity hazing. One thing I will say is that I really got the feeling of wanting to smack that stupid grimace off their faces haha. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

    The Platform (El hoyo)

My Take: The Platform (el hoyo). In a dystopian future, prisoners are held in vertical cells forced to survive on a limited food supply. Finally something original! It feels like it’s been years since I saw a premise that was completely new to me. Although I wouldn’t recommend The Platform to anyone that’s a little squeamish, if you can take it, you’ll have 2 hours filled with mystery and violence. I mean who wants to be able to finish their dinner tonight anyway?

    The Ivory Game

My Take: Filmmakers go undercover to expose the illegal Ivory trade. So if you didn’t already know, poachers are slaughtering elephants by the thousands to fuel the horrible and deeply corrupted, illegal Ivory trade. It’s kind of shocking that most of us don’t realize that elephants could be extinct in the next few years. The Ivory Game is one of those pretty sad movies on Netflix that really put things into perspective. These journalist risked their lives to expose this, and anyone who risks their life for such a worthy cause deserves our attention at the very least. No good Netflix list is complete without real life examples of heroism.

    Take Me

My Take: A man runs a kidnap for hire business to help people get over their issues. I gotta say, it’s a pretty random movie, but most are on my Netflix list. The premise is funny, in a ridiculous type of way, and the acting holds up, in an absurd type of way too! I guess this one was just fun guessing what’s gonna happen. It reminded me a little bit of Cheap Thrills with the same lead character. Don’t take yourself too seriously because good movies on Netflix are hard to find. Just sit back and enjoy.

    Narcos

My Take: Narcos chronicles the rise and fall of the Colombian cartels of the 1980's. I would have to say that Narcos is the best series I've seen on Netflix yet. I think most people in America shutter at the thought of a typical Mexican drug cartel, but the Colombian drug cartels are the ones who started it all. Besides my lifelong infatuation with the Colombia cartels, the best thing about Narcos is that it's based on true events that make this series almost as educational as it is interesting. It's always surprising to me that people actually look up to gangster and drug lords as if it's something that's "cool" when they don't really understand the effect these people have on their communities and, in this case, an entire country! This is undoubtedly the best choice for you if you like drug cartel movies. Clearly, drug cartel movies on Netflix don't get better than this. The next best thing about Narcos is the acting. Pablo Escobar, played by Wagner Moura, is one of the most evil and at the same time, likeable, characters I've ever seen. His ruthlessness knows no bounds, but his dominance over his peers from the outset is obvious. Another very cool part of this series is that Narcos is filmed on location in Bogota, Medellin, and Panama, among other Central and South American places and it shows them in all their beauty. So if you like a ton of vicious action and are interested in the true story of the most well-known drug lords out there, you came to the right place. There's a ton of movies about drug cartels, but none of them compare to the real thing. If there was a single series I could recommend to watch on Netflix, it would be Narcos.

    Umrika

My Take: A young man goes in search of his brother who is thought to have left their tiny village to gain success in America. This one is chock full of laughs and serves as an interesting glimpse of how lives are lived throughout the most impoverished parts of the world. I have a feeling it is one of the best bollywood movies on Netflix right now. I thought it was a meaningful story that really put into perspective the view other cultures have of America as some mythical land where all your dreams come true no matter what.

    The Irishman

My Take: War veteran Frank Sheeran has a chance meeting with mobster Russell Bufalino, ultimately joining the ranks of his Pennsylvania crime family. I mean it doesn't take much to see that The Irishman is gonna be a good movie. It stars arguably the best trio of mobster actors we have seen, or may ever see in our lifetime. I particularly enjoyed learning about Jimmy Hoffa, as I really had no idea about the man. The cast is great from head to toe, and if you're a fan of classics like GoodFellas or Casino, you're gonna enjoy the Irishman for sure. Another aspect I really liked was the small death facts that get scattered on characters throughout the movie. The last thing I'll say is that this movie is long! I had to watch it in pieces, but it just made for two entertaining nights of the best actors we have on the planet. It's great to see Netflix crime movies get an upgrade.
