The Best of Netflix Sci Fi Right Now

When you start glancing through the movies on Netflix, you start to notice that sci fi is not the biggest category on Netflix streaming. Well let me make myself clear, there are plenty of Netflix sci fi series to watch these days, but there are few Netflix sci fi movies worth watching. That's a shame if you ask me but luckily there are still some great Netflix sci fi movies to catch this month. The best part about Netflix sci fi is that you get to escape reality for two hours and dive into the mind of the director. With this Netflix sci fi movies list, I tried to narrow it down to true sci fi and not just some random fantasy ideas some director came up with. The best sci fi on Netflix are the movies that expand the ideas of technology to unimaginable heights. Be sure to check out the titles below before they disappear from Netflix streaming. Donnie Darko

Jamilslist

Taking place in suburban America, Donnie is a loaner who finds comfort with his friend Frank.
Donnie Darko is one of those throwback Netflix sci fi movies. It recently showed back up on Netflix streaming and I was quick to add it to my list. Some of the best sci fi movies on Netflix are the ones dealing with time. When you start to take a journey through time the possibilities become endless and you can really get lost in your head. Donnie Darko plays with theories that of course can't be proven but are intriguing none the less. I believe it was Einstein who came up with a plausible theory of time travel. We are all about 99.9% sure that it's total BS, but that doesn't prevent our mind from wandering to that .01% every once in a while. Netflix sci fi movies like Donnie Darko come around once a generation so watch it while you can.

John Dies at the End

Jamilslist

In the spirit of journeying through time, John Dies at The End carries on the legacy that Donnie Darko started. Similar to Donnie Darko, John Dies at the End has created a cult-like following. What separates John Dies at the End from the rest of Netflix sci fi movies is how weird this movie is. Everything about John Dies at the End" makes you feel like you're the crazy person for watching it. It's the story of a new drug that hits the street and is changing people's lives forever. On the plus side, this movie also contains a little bit of Netflix horror in it. If you're looking for one of the Netflix sci fi movies that are going at a mile a minute pace with no logical end in sight, then *John Dies at the End might just be the movie for you.

What Happened to Monday

Jamilslist

What did happen to Monday? This is probably one of the most original Netflix sci fi movies I've seen this year. What Happened to Monday takes place in the future were siblings are no longer allowed to be born to prevent the overpopulation of the world. I really liked Noomi Rapace as an actress ever since she starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She continues her great acting in What Happened to Monday. What I liked about this movie and why I consider it to be one of the best Netflix sci fi movies is that it has an original plot for a science fiction movie. I think we all know that overpopulation is something that humans are going to have to deal with at some time or another. Thankfully I won't be around to see it but I don't think it's going to be pretty. I wouldn't consider What Happened to Monday to be the most realistic future for humans, but it is a creative look at what lengths people might go to curb the population. This is one of the movies on Netflix sci fi that was surprisingly violent. The story jumps from one scene to the next and I think you'll have no problem staying engaged the whole time.

The Road

Jamilslist

The Road is the story of a man traveling with his son through a post-apocalyptic wasteland trying to survive. Talk about one of the bleak Netflix sci fi movies. The Road gets extremely dark at times. I would say The Road is one of the more serious types of Netflix sci fi on my list today. What stands out in The Road is that there is not a ton of dialogue. You really start to get a sense of being in a horribly barren world devoid of human compassion. I consider this movie part of the best sci fi on Netflix because it is a chilling story of what lengths a parent will go to to protect their child. The Road is by far the most intense movie on this list of the best sci fi movies on Netflix and I don't think you will be laughing while watching it as much as you will with the others. That shouldn't take anything away from The Road though. Netflix sci fi movies shouldn't always be fun, sometimes they can be a haunting image of burnt landscapes and vile human beings. Enjoy!

*Turbo Kid

Jamilslist

Turbo Kid must have come from the mind of an 80's baby. There's so much to like about this type of quirky Netflix sci fi. Turbo Kid takes place in a post-apocalyptic era where everyone is fending for themselves. The b-rate horror and gore of Turbo Kid is great. This is one of the best fantasy movies on Netflix and is a hilarious take on a poor mans "Mad Max". Turbo Kid is a surprisingly charming movie with a lot of brutal indie film special effects that will have you laughing a lot more than cringing. If you're looking for campy fun with lots of retro styles and old school characters, then this is the best sci fi on Netflix for you.

So there you have it, the best sci fi movies on Netflix on streaming content. When looking for good Netflix sci fi, it's important to find some options that aren't completely out of the realm of reality. I don't mind movies that are complete fiction, but they need to have at least a little bit of a plausible plot for anything to make sense in the end. I think the best sci fi movies on Netflix will always make you wonder about the possibilities of something happening like it does in the movies. It doesn't have to be something you actually believe will happen in your lifetime, but it's always more fun to think of it in a way that could someday be possible, even if it isn't.
